Schlechterella is a genus of flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae, first described taxonomically in 1893 by the German botanist Karl Moritz Schumann. The genus is classified within the subfamily Periplocoideae. It was named in honor of Friedrich Richard Rudolf Schlechter, a prominent German botanist and taxonomist known for his extensive work on orchids and the flora of Africa.
The genus is indigenous to East Africa and the Horn of Africa. Its native range includes Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania. Members of Schlechterella are typically characterized as perennial climbers or subshrubs, consistent with many other genera within the Periplocoideae subfamily.
While taxonomic databases such as the International Plant Names Index (IPNI) and Plants of the World Online (POWO) recognize the genus, it remains relatively obscure in general botanical literature. The primary recognized species associated with the genus include:
- Schlechterella abyssinica
- Schlechterella africana
Scientific documentation of Schlechterella is largely confined to herbarium specimens and taxonomic surveys of East African flora. Information regarding its specific ecological roles, phytochemical properties, or conservation status is limited.
