Description
Schistura kohchangensis is a small, benthic freshwater fish belonging to the stone loaches (family Nemacheilidae). Like other members of the genus Schistura, it possesses an elongated body, subterminal mouth with barbels, and a series of dark vertical bars or spots along the flanks. Detailed morphological measurements and coloration patterns for this species are not extensively documented in widely accessible scientific literature.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is known from the eastern region of the Gulf of Thailand, with the type locality reported from the vicinity of Koh Chang Island in Trat Province, Thailand. It inhabits clear, fast‑flowing streams and rivers with rocky or gravel substrates, typical of many Schistura species. Precise range limits and population distribution beyond the type locality remain insufficiently recorded.
Ecology
Information on the ecology, diet, and reproductive biology of S. kohchangensis is limited. As with congeners, it is presumed to be a bottom‑dwelling insectivore, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates found among substrate interstices.
Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Schistura kohchangensis as of the latest assessment cycle. Consequently, its conservation status is currently unlisted. Potential threats may include habitat degradation, water pollution, and hydrological alterations common to freshwater ecosystems in the region, but specific impact assessments for this species are lacking.
Research Gaps
- Detailed morphological description and diagnostic characters.
- Comprehensive distribution mapping and population assessments.
- Ecological studies covering diet, life history, and habitat preferences.
- Evaluation of conservation status and potential threats.
