Schelklingen

Schelklingen is a town in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Situated in the Swabian Alb region, approximately 10 kilometers west of Ehingen (Donau) and 20 kilometers southeast of Ulm, it lies on the Schmiech river, a tributary of the Danube.

Geography

Schelklingen is located in the heart of the Swabian Alb, characterized by its karst landscape, limestone formations, and numerous caves. The town's administrative area covers a significant portion of this unique geological region. The Schmiech river flows through the town before joining the Danube.

History

The area around Schelklingen has a long history of human settlement, evidenced by significant archaeological finds from the Stone Age. The Hohle Fels cave, located within the municipality, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has yielded some of the earliest known examples of figurative art and musical instruments from the Ice Age.

Schelklingen itself was first documented in 1127. It received market rights in the 13th century and was granted town privileges around 1300. Throughout the Middle Ages, it was a regional center, eventually becoming part of the Kingdom of Württemberg in the early 19th century.
