Schalk Burger (born 14 April 1983) is a South African former professional rugby union player, best known for playing as an openside flanker. He was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and attended Grey High School, where he began playing rugby at a competitive level.
Club career
Burger made his senior provincial debut for the Western Province in 2002. He subsequently became a regular member of the Stormers in Super Rugby, playing for the franchise from 2005 until his retirement from professional rugby in 2019. Over his Super Rugby career he made more than 100 appearances and was recognized for his breakdown skills and high work rate.
International career
Burger earned his first cap for the South Africa national team, the Springboks, on 9 June 2003 against New Zealand. He accumulated 86 test caps between 2003 and 2015, scoring 45 points (nine tries). He was a member of the Springboks squad that won the 2007 Rugby World Cup, contributing notably in the knockout stages. Burger was also selected for the 2008 and 2011 British & Irish Lions tours, although injuries limited his participation.
Playing style and recognition
Renowned for his aggressive tackling, turnover ability, and leadership on the field, Burger was frequently cited as one of the top openside flankers globally during his career. He received several individual accolades, including South African Rugby Player of the Year (2006) and a nomination for the IRB World Player of the Year (2006, 2009).
Injuries and retirement
Burger’s career was affected by multiple injuries, most prominently a serious knee ligament injury sustained during the 2009 British & Irish Lions tour, which required extensive rehabilitation. Despite these setbacks, he returned to high-level competition and continued to play for both club and country. He announced his retirement from professional rugby in 2019, after a final season with the Stormers.

Since retiring, Burger has been involved in rugby development programs in South Africa and has served as a commentator and analyst for domestic and international rugby broadcasts. He also engages in charitable work, focusing on youth sports initiatives.
