Description
Scarthyla is a small genus of neotropical frogs within the Hylidae family, characterized by slender bodies, relatively long limbs, and expanded toe pads adapted for arboreal locomotion. Members of the genus typically exhibit a dorsal coloration ranging from brown to gray, often with mottled patterns that provide camouflage among leaf litter and vegetation. The ventral surfaces are generally lighter, and males possess vocal sacs used during breeding calls.

Distribution and Habitat
Species of Scarthyla are distributed across the Amazon Basin and adjacent lowland tropical regions of South America. Their range includes parts of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and the Guianas. These frogs inhabit humid, forested environments, frequently occupying temporary ponds, flooded forest floors, and canopy-level water bodies where they breed.

Recognized Species
The genus currently comprises two widely accepted species:

  1. Scarthyla goinorum (Goin's treefrog) – Found throughout the central Amazonian lowlands, primarily associated with stagnant water bodies in forested habitats.
  2. Scarthyla vigilans (Vigilant treefrog) – Occurs in the northern Amazon region, occupying similar ecological niches to S. goinorum.

Ecology and Behavior
Scarthyla frogs are primarily nocturnal and display nocturnal calling activity linked to the rainy season, which coincides with breeding. Their diet consists mainly of small arthropods captured by opportunistic foraging. Reproduction involves the deposition of eggs in temporary aquatic sites, where tadpoles develop before metamorphosing into terrestrial juveniles.

Conservation Status
Both recognized species are currently listed as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), owing to their relatively wide distribution and presumed large populations. However, ongoing habitat loss due to deforestation and water pollution poses potential localized threats. Continued monitoring of population trends and habitat integrity is recommended.
