Description
Scaphella junonia is a marine gastropod mollusk characterized by a large, smooth, and glossy shell. Adult shells typically reach lengths of 80–150 mm, with occasional specimens exceeding 160 mm. The shell is fusiform with a relatively short, blunt spire and a wide aperture that occupies most of the shell’s length. The outer lip is thickened and slightly reflected. The surface is generally cream‑white to pale tan, bearing a series of irregular brown or reddish‑brown axial bands or blotches; these markings are variable among individuals. The columella bears three to four distinct folds. The operculum is thin and corneous.
Distribution and habitat
Scaphella junonia occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the coastal waters of the southeastern United States (Florida to Texas). It is typically found on sandy or muddy substrates at depths ranging from 30 m to over 200 m, although most records cluster between 50 m and 150 m.
Ecology
As a member of the family Volutidae, S. junonia is a carnivorous or scavenging gastropod. It preys on benthic invertebrates such as bivalves and other mollusks, and it may also consume carrion. The species is nocturnal, emerging from the substrate at night to feed. Reproduction follows the general volutid pattern of producing encapsulated egg masses that develop into planktonic veliger larvae before settlement.
Human use and conservation
The attractive shell of Scaphella junonia is prized by shell collectors and is occasionally traded in the ornamental shell market. Over‑collection in some localities has prompted concerns, but the species is not currently listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. No specific conservation measures are documented, though general marine habitat protection benefits the species.
