Savvas Chamberlain is a Canadian scientist, inventor, professor, and technology entrepreneur noted for his contributions to semiconductor device engineering, particularly in the development of silicon image sensors, metal‑oxide‑semiconductor field‑effect transistors (MOSFETs), and charge‑coupled devices (CCDs).
Early life and education
Chamberlain earned his Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.
Academic career
He joined the University of Waterloo’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he served as a faculty member for more than 25 years. During his tenure, Chamberlain conducted research on semiconductor devices and integrated circuits, publishing over 150 peer‑reviewed papers and co‑authoring more than 20 patents related to image sensor technology. He was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus by the University of Waterloo in 1999.
Industrial ventures
Drawing on his university research, Chamberlain founded DALSA Corporation in 1980, a company that became a leading international supplier of digital imaging hardware and software. Under his leadership as chief executive officer, DALSA grew to employ approximately 1,100 staff and generated revenues of CAD 212 million by the end of 2010. He remained CEO until August 2007 and stepped down as chairman in February 2011.
Following his work at DALSA, Chamberlain became the chief executive officer of EXEL Research Inc., a firm focused on advanced imaging and sensor technologies.
