Definition
The Sasaguri Line (佐々倉線, Sasaguri-sen) is a regional railway line in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, operated by the Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu).
Overview
The line serves the northern part of the Fukuoka metropolitan area, connecting a series of local communities between the city of Fukuoka and the town of Sasaguri. It was originally opened in the early 20th century as part of a private railway network, later nationalised, and has been operated by JR Kyushu since the privatisation of Japanese National Railways in 1987. The route is entirely single‑track and is primarily used for commuter and regional passenger services.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Sasaguri” derives from the town of Sasaguri (佐々倉町) in Kasuya District, Fukuoka Prefecture, which lies near the northern terminus of the line. The kanji 佐々倉 are read “Sasaguri,” and the line’s designation reflects its service to this locality.
Characteristics
- Gauge: 1,067 mm (Cape gauge), the standard gauge for most Japanese conventional railways.
- Track layout: Entirely single‑track; passing loops are provided at several stations to allow bidirectional traffic.
- Electrification: The line is not electrified; services are operated using diesel multiple‑unit (DMU) rolling stock, typically JR Kyushu’s KiHa series.
- Length and stations: The line spans approximately 22 km and includes around 12 stations, ranging from urban stops within Fukuoka City to more rural stations near Sasaguri.
- Service pattern: Trains run at regular intervals throughout the day, with higher frequency during peak commuter periods. The line integrates with the broader JR Kyushu network, allowing transfers to the Kagoshima Main Line and other regional services.
- Operational history: Opened in stages between 1904 and 1915 under private ownership, the line was nationalised in 1907, and later transferred to JR Kyushu following the 1987 rail reforms.
