Sarvepalli Gopal

Sarvepalli Gopal (14 April 1923 – 5 May 2015) was an Indian historian, biographer, and academic administrator known for his scholarly works on modern Indian political history and for serving as Vice‑Chancellor of Andhra University. He contributed extensively to the study of Indian nationalism and the Indian National Congress, and authored a noted biography of Jawaharlal Nehr u.

Early life and education
Sarvepalli Gopal was born in the town of Tiruttani, in the then Madras Presidency (present‑day Tamil Nadu, India), into the family of philosopher and former President of India Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He completed his undergraduate studies at Andhra University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then pursued higher education at the University of Oxford, where he earned a Master of Arts and later a DPhil in history, focusing on British‑Indian relations.

Academic career
After returning to India, Gopal joined the Department of History at Andhra University as a lecturer. Over the ensuing decades he progressed through academic ranks, becoming a professor of modern Indian history. In 1974 he was appointed Vice‑Chancellor of Andhra University, a position he held until 1978. He also served as President of the Indian History Congress and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Research and publications
Gopal’s scholarship concentrated on the political developments of the Indian independence movement. His principal works include:

  • Jawaharlal Nehru: A Biography (1975) – a comprehensive study of the first Prime Minister of India.
  • History of the Indian National Congress (1972) – an analytical account of the Congress party’s evolution.
  • The Rise of the Indian National Congress (1978) – a focused examination of early nationalist activities.

He contributed numerous articles to peer‑reviewed journals and edited volumes on Indian history.

Awards and honours
In recognition of his contributions to Indian historiography, Gopal was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third‑highest civilian award, in 1973. He also received honorary doctorates from several Indian universities and was appointed to various governmental advisory committees on education and culture.

Personal life and death
Sarvepalli Gopal was married and had children; details of his personal life remain largely private in public records. He passed away on 5 May 2015 in Hyderabad, Telangana, after a brief illness. His death was noted by academic institutions and governmental bodies, which highlighted his role in shaping modern Indian historical scholarship.
