Sarıkaya is a district (ilçe) of Yozgat Province in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey. The administrative center of the district is the town of Sarıkaya.
Geography
The district covers an area of approximately 634 km² (245 sq mi) and lies at an average elevation of about 1,070 m (3,510 ft) above sea level. It is situated in the western part of Yozgat Province, bordering the districts of Yozgat, Sorgun, Çekerek, and Kadışehri. The region experiences a continental climate, characterized by cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers.
Demographics
According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the population of Sarıkaya district was 20,001 in the year 2022. The majority of the inhabitants are ethnic Turks, and the predominant language is Turkish. The district’s population is largely rural, with a significant proportion engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry.
History
The area that now constitutes Sarıkaya has been inhabited since antiquity. Archaeological evidence indicates presence of Hittite and later Roman settlements. Throughout the medieval period, the region was under Seljuk and subsequently Ottoman rule. The modern administrative structure of the district was established with the formation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.
Economy
The district’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, with cultivation of cereals (wheat, barley), legumes, and sugar beet. Livestock farming, particularly sheep and cattle, also contributes to the local economy. In addition, Sarıkaya is known for its geothermal resources; several thermal springs and related facilities support a modest tourism sector focused on health and wellness.
Infrastructure
Sarıkaya is accessed via provincial road D.885, which connects it to the provincial capital, Yozgat, and other nearby districts. The district has basic educational facilities, including primary and secondary schools, and a health center that serves the local population.
Culture and Points of Interest
The district contains several historical and natural attractions, such as the ruins of the ancient settlement of Boğazkale, Byzantine-era churches, and the Sarıkaya Thermal Springs. Local festivals, often tied to agricultural cycles and religious observances, are held annually and reflect traditional Anatolian customs.
Administration
Sarıkaya district is governed by an elected mayor (belediye başkanı) and a district governor (kaymakam) appointed by the central government. The district comprises multiple neighbourhoods (mahalles) and villages (köys).
