Sanand taluka is an administrative subdivision (taluka) of Ahmedabad district in the state of Gujarat, India. The taluka’s headquarters is the town of Sanand, which lies approximately 45 km north of the city of Ahmedabad. Sanand taluka forms part of the Ahmedabad metropolitan region and is governed by the Sanand Taluka Panchayat Samiti.
Geography
The taluka covers an area of roughly 143 km². It is situated in the northern part of the Gujarat plains, characterized by relatively flat terrain and alluvial soils. The region experiences a semi‑arid climate, with hot summers, a monsoon season from June to September, and mild winters. The Bhogavo River and its tributaries flow through parts of the taluka, providing water for agriculture and domestic use.
Administrative divisions
Sanand taluka comprises a number of villages and census towns. As of the 2011 Census of India, the taluka contained 94 villages and 7 statutory towns. The taluka is subdivided into several revenue villages and is represented in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly by the Sanand constituency.
Demographics
According to the 2011 Census, Sanand taluka had a total population of approximately 214,000 persons. The sex ratio was 915 females per 1,000 males. The literacy rate stood at 79.2 %, with male literacy at 86.5 % and female literacy at 71.3 %. Gujarati is the predominant language, while Hindi and English are also used for official and educational purposes.
Economy
Historically, the taluka’s economy was based on agriculture, with major crops including wheat, cotton, and groundnut. Since the early 2000s, Sanand has experienced rapid industrialisation, largely driven by the Gujarat government’s policy to develop a special economic zone (SEZ) and the establishment of automobile manufacturing plants. Notable investments include a large automobile assembly plant operated by Tata Motors and a manufacturing facility by Ford Motor Company (which ceased operations in 2022). The presence of these facilities has spurred ancillary industries, logistics, and service sectors, contributing to a shift from agrarian to mixed‑economy employment.
Infrastructure
Transportation links include the National Highway 8 (now part of the Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway) that traverses the taluka, providing road connectivity to major cities. The Sanand Railway Station, on the Western Railway’s Ahmedabad–Delhi line, serves passenger and freight traffic. The taluka is also proximate to the Ahmedabad International Airport, located about 40 km to the south.
Education and health
Sanand taluka hosts a range of educational institutions, from primary schools to colleges affiliated with Gujarat University. Prominent institutions include the Sanand College of Engineering and Technology. Health services are provided by government primary health centres, private hospitals, and clinics situated primarily in Sanand town.
Recent developments
The Gujarat government continues to promote industrial growth in Sanand through incentives for green manufacturing and the development of infrastructure such as water supply, sewage treatment, and power. Environmental concerns have been raised regarding water consumption and pollution associated with rapid industrialisation, leading to ongoing monitoring and regulatory measures.
