San Pedro Necta

San Pedro Necta is a municipality located in the department of Huehuetenango in the western highlands of Guatemala. It is situated within the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Central America.

Geography The municipality is characterized by a rugged, mountainous topography with varying elevations. The municipal seat is positioned at approximately 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) above sea level. It is bordered by the municipalities of San Antonio Huista to the north, Santiago Chimaltenango and Todos Santos Cuchumatán to the east, San Juan Atitán and Colotenango to the south, and La Libertad and La Democracia to the west.

Economy The primary economic activity in San Pedro Necta is agriculture. The region's climate and elevation are particularly suited for the cultivation of high-altitude coffee, which is the municipality's most significant export product. Local farmers often organize into cooperatives to process and market their coffee. Other subsistence crops grown in the area include maize (corn), beans, and various fruits and vegetables.

Demographics and Culture The population of San Pedro Necta is predominantly of Maya descent, specifically belonging to the Mam ethnic group. Consequently, the Mam language is widely spoken among the inhabitants, often alongside Spanish. The community maintains traditional indigenous customs, which are reflected in local governance structures, religious practices, and the weaving of traditional textiles.

Administration As a municipality of Guatemala, San Pedro Necta is governed by a municipal council led by an elected mayor. The municipality is divided into several administrative units, including villages (aldeas) and smaller settlements (caseríos), which facilitate the distribution of public services and local representation.
