The local economy is principally based on agriculture, livestock raising, and riverine fishing. Key agricultural products include rice, maize, plantain, and various tubers. Cattle ranching is practiced on the municipality’s extensive low‑land pastures, while the proximity to the Magdalena River supports both commercial and subsistence fishing activities. Small‑scale commerce and informal trade also contribute to the municipal economy.

Infrastructure and Services
San Martín de Loba is accessed primarily by a network of regional roads that connect it to the departmental capital, Cartagena, and other nearby municipalities such as El Banco and Santa Cruz de Mompox. The municipality maintains primary education facilities, a health center providing basic medical services, and limited municipal utilities, including electricity and potable water distribution.

Cultural life in San Martín de Loba reflects typical Caribbean Colombian traditions, with local festivals often centered around religious patron saints and agricultural cycles. Music genres such as cumbia and vallenato are popular, and traditional dances are performed during communal celebrations.
