San Martín barracks

The San Martín Barracks (Spanish: Cuartel San Martín) is a historical military installation located in Miraflores, Lima, Peru.

History

Construction of the San Martín Barracks began in 1904 and it was completed in the early 20th century. Named in honor of General José de San Martín, a pivotal figure in the South American wars of independence, the complex served as a significant military base for the Peruvian Army for decades. Beyond its primary role as a barracks, it also housed a military prison.

The barracks gained particular notoriety during periods of political turmoil and internal conflict in Peru, especially in the late 20th century. It was associated with various military operations and detention activities during the fight against insurgent groups such as Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path).

Current Status

Following its abandonment as an active military facility, the extensive complex became a subject of urban planning and preservation debates in Lima. Parts of the former barracks have since undergone redevelopment. For example, a major shopping mall, Larcomar, was constructed on a portion of the original site, leveraging its dramatic cliffside location overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Other sections of the barracks have remained derelict or have been earmarked for various civic and commercial projects, reflecting ongoing challenges in balancing historical preservation with urban development needs in the Peruvian capital.
