Definition
San Blas‑Canillejas is a municipal district (distrito) of the city of Madrid, the capital of Spain. It constitutes one of the 21 administrative districts that compose the municipality.
Overview
Located in the eastern part of Madrid, San Blas‑Canillejas occupies an area of approximately 22.36 km². According to the most recent municipal statistics (2020), the district has a population of around 157 000 inhabitants, yielding a population density of roughly 7 000 inhabitants per square kilometre. The district is subdivided into several neighborhoods (barrios), the principal ones being San Blas, Canillejas, Simancas, and Almenara. It is primarily residential, with a mix of mid‑rise apartment blocks, low‑rise housing, and industrial zones. The district is served by multiple lines of the Madrid Metro (including lines 1, 5, 7, and 8) and by the Cercanías commuter rail network, providing connectivity to the city centre and surrounding municipalities.
Etymology/Origin
The name “San Blas‑Canillejas” combines the historic names of two former independent villages that were incorporated into the municipality of Madrid during the 20th century. San Blas derives from the Catholic saint Blasius (San Blas in Spanish), whose name has been associated with the locality since at least the 16th century, likely due to the presence of a chapel or parish dedicated to the saint. Canillejas is believed to originate from the Arabic term qanīl‑ (meaning “little garden”) combined with the suffix “‑eja,” typical of toponyms in the region, reflecting the area’s historic agricultural character.
