Samuel T. Chase

Samuel Treat Chase (October 20, 1819 – February 13, 1903) was an American lawyer, judge, and politician who served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Illinois.

Early Life and Education

Born in Claremont, New Hampshire, Samuel Treat Chase received his education at Dartmouth College. Following his graduation, he pursued legal studies and was admitted to the bar. He subsequently relocated to Illinois, where he commenced his legal career.

Career

Chase established a successful legal practice in Peoria, Illinois. His distinguished legal acumen led him into public service. He served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives, where he contributed to the state's legislative process before embarking on his judicial career.

In 1864, Chase was elected as an Associate Justice to the Supreme Court of Illinois. He served in this capacity until 1870, when he was elevated to the prestigious position of Chief Justice of the same court. During his tenure on the Supreme Court, particularly as Chief Justice, he played a significant role in shaping Illinois jurisprudence during a period of considerable industrial and legal development in the state. His judicial opinions are noted for their adherence to established legal principles and their clear articulation.

Personal Life

Samuel Treat Chase married and established a family. He remained an influential figure within the Illinois legal community until his death in Chicago in 1903 at the age of 83.
