Sam Rolfe (June 2, 1912 – July 14, 1995) was an American screenwriter and television producer best known for co‑creating the 1960s spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with author and producer Leonard Stern.
Early life and education
- Born Samuel Roussell in San Francisco, California.
- Attended the University of California, Berkeley, and later studied at the University of Southern California, where he earned a degree in journalism.
Career
- Began his writing career in Hollywood as a contract writer for Paramount Pictures in the 1940s, contributing to B‑movies such as The Man Who Walked Alone (1945).
- Served in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II, after which he returned to screenwriting.
- In the 1950s, wrote scripts for television anthology series, including Studio One and The Lieutenant.
- In 1964, conceived and co‑created The Man from U.N.C.L.E.; the show premiered on NBC in September 1964 and ran for four seasons, spawning a spin‑off series (The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.), a feature film (The Spy with My Face, 1965), and numerous international adaptations.
- Also contributed to the series The Rogues (1964) and served as a producer on The Avengers (UK) during its 1966–1967 season, providing the American adaptation of the series’ format.
Later work and legacy
- After U.N.C.L.E., Rolfe continued writing for television, including episodes of The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman in the 1970s.
- Retired from active production in the early 1980s.
