Samuel Alfred "Sam" De Grasse (June 12, 1875 – November 29, 1953) was a Canadian actor, primarily known for his prolific career in American silent films. He often portrayed villains, authority figures, and character roles, appearing in over 100 films during his career.
Early Life and Career Born in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada, De Grasse began his career on the stage before transitioning to the burgeoning film industry in the United States around 1915. His brothers, Frank De Grasse and Robert De Grasse, also had careers in filmmaking, with Frank as a director and Robert as an actor.
Film Career De Grasse quickly established himself as a prominent character actor, particularly in the employ of director D.W. Griffith. He appeared in several of Griffith's monumental productions, including:
- The Birth of a Nation (1915): Though his role as Senator Charles Sumner was uncredited, his presence in such an influential early film marked his entry into major productions.
- Intolerance (1916): He played the role of Arthur Jenkins, a wealthy mill owner, showcasing his ability to portray stern or unsympathetic characters.
Throughout the 1920s, De Grasse became a recognizable face, frequently cast as the antagonist in swashbuckling adventures and dramas. Some of his most memorable roles include:
- Robin Hood (1922): He gave a critically acclaimed performance as the tyrannical Prince John, providing a formidable foil to Douglas Fairbanks' Robin Hood.
- The Prisoner of Zenda (1922): He played Colonel Sapt in this adaptation of Anthony Hope's novel.
- The Iron Mask (1929): De Grasse reunited with Douglas Fairbanks for this sequel to The Mark of Zorro, portraying Cardinal Richelieu, one of his final significant roles as the silent era transitioned to sound.
De Grasse's imposing physical presence and expressive face made him ideal for the dramatic demands of silent cinema. He rarely made the transition to sound films, effectively retiring from acting as the talkie era fully took hold.
Personal Life and Death Sam De Grasse died in Hollywood, California, on November 29, 1953, at the age of 78.
