Sir Samuel James Browne (13 February 1824 – 23 December 1901), commonly known as Sam Browne, was a British Indian Army officer and recipient of the Victoria Cross. He is best known for inventing the Sam Browne belt, a leather strap worn over the shoulder to support a sword or pistol, which became standard issue for many military and police forces worldwide.
Early Life and Military Career
- Born in Agra, British India, to a British family, Browning (later Browne) entered the Bengal Horse Artillery in 1840.
- He served in the First Anglo‑Sikh War (1845–1846) and later in the Indian Mutiny of 1857.
Victoria Cross
