Sam Brownback

Samuel “Sam” Brownback (born September 12, 1956) is an American politician, attorney, and former diplomat. He served as the 46th Governor of Kansas from 2011 to 2018 and was a United States Senator from Kansas from 1996 to 2011. In 2021, Brownback was appointed United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, a position he held until 2022.

Early life and education
Brownback was born in Garnett, Kansas. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Kansas State University in 1978 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1981.

Political career

  • U.S. House of Representatives (1995–1996): Elected to the House representing Kansas’s 2nd congressional district.
  • U.S. Senate (1996–2011): Appointed to fill the vacancy left by Bob Dole and subsequently elected to a full term. He served on committees including Finance, Banking, and Small Business.
