Samuel “Sam” Brownback (born September 12, 1956) is an American politician, attorney, and former diplomat. He served as the 46th Governor of Kansas from 2011 to 2018 and was a United States Senator from Kansas from 1996 to 2011. In 2021, Brownback was appointed United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, a position he held until 2022.
Early life and education
Brownback was born in Garnett, Kansas. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Kansas State University in 1978 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1981.
Political career
- U.S. House of Representatives (1995–1996): Elected to the House representing Kansas’s 2nd congressional district.
