Saltoun Parish Church

Saltoun Parish Church is a parish church of the Church of Scotland serving the civil parish of Saltoun in East Lothian, Scotland. The church is situated near the village of East Saltoun, adjacent to the historic Saltoun estate. It operates within the Presbytery of Lothian, providing regular worship services, pastoral care, and community activities for its congregation.

Location
The church building stands on the north‑east side of the B1412 road, a short distance south of East Saltoun village and approximately 10 mi southeast of the town of Haddington. The surrounding churchyard contains the graves of local residents and members of the historically prominent families associated with the Saltoun estate.

Historical overview
The present Saltoun Parish Church replaces an earlier medieval kirk that had served the parish for several centuries. The current structure was erected in the early 19th century, with the construction date commonly recorded as 1804–1805, though the exact year varies among sources. The replacement was undertaken to accommodate a growing congregation and to provide a more durable building.

The church has remained in continuous use as the parish place of worship since its completion. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, various internal alterations and repairs have been carried out, including the addition of stained‑glass windows and the refurbishment of the pews and pulpit.

Architecture
Saltoun Parish Church is a modest, rectangular‑plan building typical of rural Scottish parish churches of its period. Constructed of locally sourced sandstone, the exterior features a simple pitched roof and a small bellcote or tower at the western gable. The façade is plain, with round‑arched windows and a central entrance set within a modestly recessed portal.

The interior comprises a single nave with a raised gallery at the west end, a raised pulpit, and a modest organ. Original 19th‑century wooden furnishings survive in parts of the sanctuary, and the stained‑glass windows, installed in the late 19th century, depict biblical scenes and heraldic symbols associated with local patrons.

Heritage designation
The building is listed as a Category B historic monument by Historic Environment Scotland, recognising its architectural and historic significance within the region. The listing notes the church’s early‑19th‑century construction, its largely intact exterior, and the presence of original interior fittings.

Parish governance and activities
The congregation is led by a minister appointed by the Church of Scotland’s Presbytery of Lothian. The church’s Session (the elected body of elders) oversees the administration of parish affairs, property, and community outreach. Regular worship services are held on Sundays, with additional meetings, Sunday school, youth groups, and charitable activities organised throughout the week.

Notable associations
Members of the historically influential Hope family, who held the title of Lords Rankeillour and were significant landowners in the Saltoun area, have been associated with the church and are interred in its churchyard.
