Saliu Adetunji (born August 26, 1928 – died January 2, 2022) was the 41st Olubadan of Ibadan, a prominent traditional ruler of Ibadanland, Oyo State, Nigeria. He ascended the revered throne on March 4, 2016, and reigned until his death in early 2022.
Early Life and Business Ventures Born to Pa Olayiwola Adetunji and Alhaja Suwebat Adetunji in the Alusekere compound, Popoyemoja, Ibadan, Saliu Adetunji embarked on a diverse career path that saw him rise to prominence long before his traditional ascension. He was a successful entrepreneur and a notable figure in the Nigerian music industry. Adetunji founded several record labels, including Babalaje Records, Omo Aje Records, and Adetunji Records, which were instrumental in discovering and promoting numerous artists, particularly in the Fuji and Juju music genres. His business acumen and influence in the entertainment sector earned him recognition across the nation.
Ascension to the Olubadan Throne The Olubadan of Ibadan's succession system is unique in that it follows a well-defined hierarchical order rather than a direct lineage. Aspirants progress through two parallel lines: the Balogun line (military) and the Otun line (civilian), holding various chieftaincy titles over decades. Saliu Adetunji meticulously climbed these ranks, eventually becoming the Balogun of Ibadanland, which is the highest position before the Olubadan. Following the passing of Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade I, Adetunji was formally crowned the 41st Olubadan of Ibadan on March 4, 2016, at the age of 87.
Reign as Olubadan During his five-year reign, Oba Saliu Adetunji was a staunch defender of Ibadan's cultural heritage and the integrity of the Olubadan stool. His tenure was marked by efforts to preserve traditional practices and uphold the dignity of the chieftaincy institution. Notably, he publicly opposed attempts by the state government to review and upgrade certain Ibadan chiefs to beaded-crown Obas, viewing such moves as an erosion of Ibadan's unique traditional structure and the preeminence of the Olubadan. He maintained a strong stance against any changes he believed would undermine the established Olubadan succession system.
Death and Legacy Oba Saliu Adetunji passed away on January 2, 2022, at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, at the age of 93. His death led to a period of mourning and the traditional rites for a departed monarch, followed by the process of selecting his successor, which ultimately led to the enthronement of Oba Lekan Balogun.
Oba Saliu Adetunji is remembered for his significant contributions to the Nigerian music industry as a promoter and record label owner, and for his steadfast commitment to preserving the customs and traditions of Ibadanland during his time as Olubadan. His legacy lies in his dual impact on both modern Nigerian culture and the ancient traditions of his people.
