Saint Pothinus

Definition
Saint Pothinus (c. d. 177 AD) was an early Christian bishop and martyr, traditionally regarded as the first bishop of Lyon in Gaul (modern France).

Overview
According to early hagiographical sources, Pothinus was a Greek from Pontus who arrived in Gaul during the mid‑2nd century, likely as a missionary under the direction of the Church in Asia Minor. He is credited with establishing the Christian community in Lyon and serving as its first bishop. During the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Pothinus was arrested, subjected to torture, and executed in 177 AD. His martyrdom is recorded by the contemporary Christian writer Blandina and later by the 5th‑century historian Eusebius of Caesarea.

His relics were preserved in the early Christian basilica of Saint‑John in Lyon and later transferred to the Abbey of Saint‑Just. Pothinus’ feast day is celebrated on 2 June in the Roman Catholic Church and on 2 June or 12 February in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, depending on local calendars.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Pothinus” derives from the Greek ποθινός (pothinos), meaning “of the river” or “river‑born.” It was a common Hellenic personal name in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. The appellation “Saint” reflects his canonical recognition as a holy figure by Christian ecclesiastical authorities.

Characteristics

  • Clerical Role: First historically attested bishop of Lyon, credited with organizing the earliest Christian liturgy and catechesis in the region.
  • Martyrdom: Executed by torture and beheading during the imperial persecution of 177 AD; his death is emblematic of early Christian witness to faith.
  • Veneration: Recognized as a patron saint of Lyon and of individuals suffering persecution. Relics associated with him were venerated in medieval Lyon and later dispersed to various churches.
  • Iconography: Frequently depicted in art as a bishop holding a palm branch (symbol of martyrdom) and sometimes shown with a crucifix or with the young martyr Blandina, with whom he shared the same persecution.
