Definition
Saihan is an urban district of the prefecture‑level city of Hohhot, the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China. It is one of the six districts that constitute Hohhot’s municipal area.
Overview
Located in the north‑western part of Hohhot, Saihan District covers an area of approximately 1,200 km² (≈463 sq mi). According to the 2020 national census, the district had a permanent resident population of roughly 750,000 people, making it one of the more densely populated districts within the city. Saihan serves as a key administrative, commercial, and residential hub, hosting a number of government offices, educational institutions, and industrial zones. The district is well integrated into Hohhot’s transport network, featuring several major highways, railway stations, and the Hohhot Baita International Airport, which lies partially within its boundaries.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Saihan” (赛罕, Sàihǎn in Mandarin) is derived from the Mongolian word sain (or sainhan), meaning “white” or “bright.” This reflects the region’s historical ties to Mongolian culture and the prevalence of the Mongolian language in Inner Mongolia. The characters used to transcribe the name in Chinese are phonetic rather than semantic.
Characteristics
-
Geography: Saihan lies on the southern banks of the Huangshui River and is bordered to the east by Xincheng District, to the south by Yuquan District, and to the west by the rural counties of Tumed and Huimin. The terrain is predominantly flat, characteristic of the Central Asian steppe, with a semi‑arid continental climate featuring cold, dry winters and warm, relatively humid summers.
-
Economy: The district’s economy is diversified. Major sectors include services (government administration, finance, retail), light manufacturing (textiles, food processing), and logistics, owing to its proximity to the airport and railway lines. Recent development plans emphasize high‑tech industries and urban renewal.
-
Demographics: The population comprises ethnic Han Chinese, Mongols, and smaller numbers of Hui, Manchu, and other minority groups. Mandarin Chinese is the primary language of administration and education, while Mongolian enjoys co‑official status in the region.
-
Infrastructure: Saihan District hosts several educational institutions, including branches of the Inner Mongolia University for Nationalities. Healthcare facilities include the Hohhot First Hospital and multiple community clinics. Public transportation is served by the Hohhot Metro (Line 1 and Line 2) and an extensive bus network.
-
Cultural Sites: Notable attractions include the Hohhot Museum of Inner Mongolia, the historic Zhaojun Tomb (though technically in the adjacent district), and various parks such as the Saihan Cultural Park, which blend Mongolian motifs with modern landscaping.
