Sa Dingding

Sa Dingding (Chinese: 萨顶顶; born July 15, 1981) is a Chinese folk‑pop singer, songwriter, and multi‑instrumentalist. She is known for blending traditional Chinese ethnic music with electronic and world‑music influences, and for singing in multiple languages, including Mandarin, English, Sanskrit, and various Chinese minority dialects.

Early life and education
Sa Dingding was born in Ganjiao, a village in Gulang County, Gansu Province, China. She began studying music at a young age, learning piano and later mastering traditional instruments such as the guzheng (Chinese zither). She graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she studied composition and ethnomusicology.

Career

2005–2008: Debut and early releases
Sa Dingding released her debut album, Dong Ba La, in 2005. The album incorporated folk melodies from China's Gansu region and featured electronic production.

2009: International breakthrough
Her second album, Alive (2009), was produced with the assistance of Norwegian producer Håkon Gebhardt and obtained wider international distribution through the label Universal Music. The title track “Alive” received airplay on world‑music radio stations and was featured in a short film for the Chinese cultural promotion program.

2010–2014: Further development
In 2010, Sa Dingding contributed the song “Blind” to the soundtrack of the Chinese film Cold Steel. She released the album Harmony in 2011, which continued her exploration of cross‑cultural sounds and included a collaboration with the Tibetan monk singer Phurba. The track “Snow Flower” from the album was nominated for the Golden Melody Award for Best Female Mandarin Singer.
