SS Bandırma

Definition
SS Bandırma was an Ottoman mixed‑freight steamship built in 1878, later renowned for transporting Mustafa Kemal Atatürk from Constantinople to Samsun in May 1919, an event that marked the beginning of the Turkish national movement.

Overview
Constructed in Paisley, Scotland, the vessel originally entered service as the British cargo ship Trocadero. Over its lifespan the ship changed ownership and names several times—becoming Kymi under Greek owners, then Panderma after purchase by the Ottoman Maritime Company in 1894, and finally Bandırma in 1910 when it was operated by the Ottoman Transportation Authority as a mail and coastal cargo vessel. During World I the ship survived a collision with the British submarine HMS E11 and a torpedo attack. Decommissioned in 1924, it was scrapped the following year. In recognition of its historic role, a full‑scale replica was constructed and opened as a museum ship in Samsun in 2003.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Bandırma” derives from the Turkish rendering of “Panderma,” the former name of the ship after its acquisition by the Ottoman Maritime Company. “Bandırma” is also the name of a town on the Sea of Marmara, reflecting the vessel’s service in Ottoman coastal waters.
