The SNCF Class BB 9300 is a series of 1.5 kV DC electric locomotives operated by the French national railway company, SNCF. These locomotives represent a modernized and more powerful evolution of the highly successful BB 9200 class, primarily designed for hauling express passenger trains across the French direct current electrified network.
History and Development
The BB 9300 class was developed by Alsthom and built between 1967 and 1969. A total of 35 locomotives were produced, numbered BB 9301 to BB 9335. They were conceived to meet the increasing demands for higher speed and power on SNCF's electrified lines. While sharing a similar external appearance with the earlier BB 9200s, the 9300s incorporated advancements in electrical components and control systems, resulting in a significantly increased power output.Technical Characteristics
- Power System: 1.5 kV DC overhead line.
- Wheel Arrangement: Bo-Bo (or BB in SNCF classification), signifying two bogies, each with two independently driven axles.
- Power Output: Approximately 3,870 kW (5,200 hp).
- Top Speed: Originally rated for 160 km/h (100 mph), some units were later restricted to 140 km/h for specific duties.
- Weight: Approximately 80 tonnes.
- Length: 16.20 meters.
- Traction Motors: Four DC traction motors, one per axle, driving through cardan shafts.
- Braking System: Rheostatic braking in addition to conventional air brakes.
- Livery: Initially delivered in the classic "vert celtique" (Celtic green) livery of SNCF electric locomotives, many later received the "béton" (concrete grey) livery. Towards the end of their service, some units also sported the "Corail+" or "En Voyage" liveries.
Operational Service
Upon their introduction, the BB 9300s were primarily assigned to prestigious express passenger services, including intercity trains on major direct current routes such as Paris-Lyon, Paris-Marseille, and Paris-Bordeaux. Their high power and reliability made them well-suited for both demanding passenger schedules and heavy freight movements. As the French rail network evolved with the introduction of TGV services and newer generations of locomotives, the BB 9300s gradually transitioned from primary express duties. They subsequently served on regional passenger services (TER - Transport express régional) and continued to be utilized for freight operations across the extensive DC electrified network. Their robust construction ensured a long service life, making them a common sight for several decades.
