SAP R/3 was the predecessor to SAP ERP and a real-time enterprise resource planning (ERP) software package produced by SAP AG. The "R" in R/3 stood for "Real-time," while the "3" indicated a three-tier architecture: database, application server, and client. This architecture allowed for increased scalability and flexibility compared to its predecessor, SAP R/2.
SAP R/3 provided integrated solutions across various business areas including finance, human resources, manufacturing, sales and distribution, and materials management. This integration allowed for a centralized view of business data and processes, fostering greater efficiency and decision-making.
Key functionalities included:
- Financial Accounting (FI): Managing general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and asset accounting.
- Controlling (CO): Handling cost accounting, profitability analysis, and product costing.
- Human Resources (HR): Covering personnel administration, payroll, and time management.
- Materials Management (MM): Managing procurement, inventory management, and warehouse management.
- Sales and Distribution (SD): Supporting order management, shipping, and billing.
- Production Planning (PP): Facilitating production planning, scheduling, and execution.
SAP R/3 gained widespread adoption in the 1990s and early 2000s, becoming a dominant ERP system for large and medium-sized organizations. It was eventually succeeded by SAP ERP, also known as SAP ECC (ERP Central Component), which built upon the R/3 foundation and incorporated newer technologies. While no longer actively sold or supported in its original form, SAP R/3 remains historically significant as a foundational technology in the evolution of enterprise resource planning systems. Its core functionalities and concepts are still relevant in modern SAP ERP solutions.
