Sümeg District

Sümeg District ({{lang-hu|Sümegi járás}}) is a [[district (Hungary)|district]] in [[Veszprém County]], [[Hungary]]. Its administrative seat is the town of [[Sümeg]].

Geography

Sümeg District is situated in the western part of Veszprém County. It borders [[Zala County]] to the west and [[Somogy County]] to the south. The district covers an area of approximately 327.23 square kilometers (126.34 sq mi). The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, agricultural land, and forests, forming a transitional zone between the [[Bakony]] Mountains and the [[Little Hungarian Plain]].

History

The current system of districts ({{lang-hu|járás}}) in Hungary was re-established on January 1, 2013, after a long period where they had been abolished in 1983. The Sümeg District was created as part of this administrative reorganization, largely re-establishing the historical administrative boundaries of a district centered around Sümeg.

As of its re-establishment in 2013, Sümeg District consists of 21 municipalities, including one town and 20 villages.

Demographics

The economy of Sümeg District is predominantly agricultural, with crop cultivation and livestock farming being significant activities. Tourism also plays an important role, primarily centered around the historic [[Sümeg Castle]], which attracts visitors to the region. Small and medium-sized enterprises contribute to local employment.

Transportation

The district is served by a network of local roads. Main road 84 passes through Sümeg, connecting it to [[Tapolca]] and the [[Lake Balaton]] area. A railway line also runs through the district, connecting to the national rail network.
