São Miguel das Matas is a municipality located in the state of Bahia, in the Northeast Region of Brazil. It is situated within the geographic intermediate region of Santo Antônio de Jesus and the immediate geographic region of Cruz das Almas.
Geography The municipality covers an estimated area of approximately 208 square kilometers. It is located in a transition zone between the Recôncavo Baiano and the Vale do Jiquiriçá. The topography is characterized by hilly terrain, and the climate is predominantly tropical.
History The settlement of the region began in the 19th century, driven by the expansion of agricultural activities in the interior of Bahia. São Miguel das Matas was officially established as a municipality on June 18, 1891, after being emancipated from the territory of Santo Antônio de Jesus. The name reflects a combination of a religious tribute to Saint Michael and the original dense vegetation (matas) that characterized the area.
Demographics According to the 2022 census conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the population of São Miguel das Matas is approximately 10,417 inhabitants. The population density is estimated at roughly 50 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Economy The local economy is primarily centered on the primary sector. Agriculture is the main economic driver, with significant production of coffee, cocoa, manioc, and tobacco. Livestock farming, including cattle and poultry, also contributes to the municipal revenue. Small-scale commerce and public administration constitute the remainder of the economic activity.
Culture and Infrastructure The municipality celebrates its patron saint, Saint Michael, with annual festivities in September. In terms of infrastructure, the town is connected to neighboring regions via state highways, such as the BA-539, which links the municipality to the BR-101 highway.
