Russell Ira Crowe (born April 7, 1964) is a New Zealand-born Australian actor and filmmaker. He rose to international fame for his role as Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in the historical epic film Gladiator (2000), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor. Crowe has starred in a variety of films, often portraying complex and intense characters.
Early Life
Crowe was born in Wellington, New Zealand, to Jocelyn Yvonne (née Wemyss) and John Alexander Crowe, both of whom were caterers. His mother's grandfather was Welsh, and one of his paternal great-great-grandparents was Māori. When he was four years old, his family moved to Australia.
