Runnemede is a borough situated in Camden County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States Census, the borough had a population of 10,678 residents.
History
Runnemede was incorporated as a borough on March 23 1926, formed from portions of Gloucester Township. The name “Runnemede” is a variant of “Runnymede,” the historic meadow in England where the Magna Carta was sealed in 1215, reflecting an early American practice of borrowing English place names.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, Runnemede encompasses a total area of 1.86 square miles (4.81 km²), all of which is land. The borough is bordered by Gloucester Township to the north and east, and by Deptford Township to the south and west.
Government
Runnemede operates under the borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The governing body consists of a mayor elected to a four‑year term and a six‑member borough council, with council members serving staggered three‑year terms. The mayor presides over council meetings and has limited voting rights, casting a vote only in the event of a tie.
Education
Public education for pre‑kindergarten through eighth grade is provided by the Runnemede Public School District, which operates three elementary schools. High school students (grades 9‑12) attend Triton Regional High School, part of the Black Horse Pike Regional School District, which also serves students from the neighboring boroughs of Bellmawr and Gloucester Township.
Transportation
The borough is served by several New Jersey Transit bus routes that provide connections to Philadelphia and other points within the region. Major roadways near Runnemede include Route 41 (Kings Highway) and the Atlantic City Expressway, which lies to the east of the borough.
Demographics
The 2020 Census reported a racial composition of approximately 71 % White, 13 % African American, 6 % Asian, and 10 % Hispanic or Latino of any race. The median household income, according to the American Community Survey 2019‑2023 estimates, was around $78,000.
