Rudolf Olden

Rudolf Olden (1885 – 1940) was a German journalist, author, and lawyer who became known for his outspoken criticism of the National Socialist regime and for his activities in exile during the 1930s.

Early life and education

Rudolf Olden was born in 1885 in the German Empire. He pursued legal studies at a German university, earning a doctorate in law. After completing his education, he briefly practiced as a lawyer before turning to journalism.

Career in the Weimar Republic

During the Weimar Republic, Olden worked for several liberal and democratic newspapers, contributing political commentary and investigative reporting. He was associated with publications such as the Berliner Tageblatt and the Vossische Zeitung, where he addressed issues of civil liberties, government accountability, and the rise of extremist movements. Olden also authored books and pamphlets that examined contemporary political developments and advocated for democratic principles.

Opposition to National Socialism and exile

Following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, Olden’s anti‑Nazi writings made him a target of state repression. He fled Germany, first seeking refuge in Switzerland. While in exile, he continued to write and speak against the Nazi regime, collaborating with other German émigré intellectuals and contributing to foreign‑language publications aimed at informing the international community about conditions in Germany.

In the later 1930s Olden relocated to the United States, where he remained active in exile networks of German dissidents. He participated in efforts to document Nazi atrocities and to promote democratic restoration in post‑war Europe.

Later life and death

Rudolf Olden died in 1940 while residing in the United States. His death occurred shortly after the outbreak of World War II, a period during which many German exiles were intensifying their anti‑Nazi advocacy.

Selected works

Olden authored several books and articles, notable among them:

  • Die Gefahr des Faschismus (The Danger of Fascism) – a critique of totalitarian movements.
  • Der Krieg und die Demokratie (War and Democracy) – an analysis of the interplay between conflict and democratic institutions.

Legacy

Rudolf Olden is remembered as part of the broader community of German journalists and intellectuals who resisted National Socialism from abroad. His writings contributed to contemporaneous international awareness of the regime’s oppressive policies and have been cited in scholarly works on German exile literature and the press under totalitarian rule.
