Rudo Chakwera (born 23 December 1979) is a Malawian gospel singer and music executive. She is the daughter‑in‑law of Lazarus Chakwera, the President of Malawi.
Early life and education
Chakwera was born into a musical family; her parents are Isaac Mkukupa and Gloria Rose Mkukupa. She began singing in early childhood. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in music from Chancellor College, University of Malawi, and later obtained a Master of Business Administration from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI).
Career
Although she started performing as a child, Chakwera rose to national prominence in 1999 with her debut album, which featured the popular track “Ndine Mwana Wamasiye.” She has since released several gospel albums and singles, establishing herself as a leading figure in Malawi’s contemporary gospel music scene.
Chakwera holds a seat on the National Executive Committee of the Musicians Union of Malawi. She has also served on the board of the Copyright Society of Malawi and as a board member for Channel for All Nations radio. In 2022, she performed at Maula Prison in Lilongwe as part of an outreach program for young offenders.
Personal life
She is married to Nick Chakwera, with whom she has three children.
