Royal Consort Sugui Beom (Korean: 숙의 범씨; Hanja: 淑儀 范氏; 1838 – 23 January 1884) was a royal consort of the Joseon dynasty, holding the rank of Royal Consort of the Second Junior Rank (숙의, suk‑ui). She was a concubine of King Cheoljong of Joseon and a member of the Geumseong Beom clan by birth.
Biography
- Birth: 1838, in the Kingdom of Joseon, as the daughter of Beom Won‑sik (범원식).
- Family background: Born into the Geumseong Beom clan (금성 범씨).
- Royal appointment: Received the honorific seungeun (승은) and entered the royal palace as a concubine.
Issue
- Princess Yeonghye (originally Princess Yeongsuk, 영숙옹주), born 1858. She survived into adulthood but died in 1872 at the age of fourteen, without further descendants.
- Yi Yung‑jun, a son who was raised within the royal household.
Later life and death
After King Cheoljong’s death, Royal Consort Sugui Beom left the palace on 16 January 1864 and lived outside the court with her daughter. She died on 23 January 1884 at the age of 46 during the 20th year of King Gojong’s reign.
Burial
- Initially interred in Hongeun‑dong, Seodaemun District, Seoul.
- In 1969 her remains were transferred to the Seosamneung Cluster in Wondang‑dong, Deokyang District, Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, the burial site of King Cheoljong and Queen Cheorin.
- The tomb was designated Korean Historic Site No. 200 on 26 May 1970.
Religion
She practiced Korean Buddhism.
Cultural depictions
Royal Consort Sugui Beom has been portrayed in Korean television dramas, including by Yoon Cho‑hee in King’s First Love (1975) and by Chae Si‑ra in Daewongun (1990).
Historical significance
She is notable as one of the few surviving consorts of King Cheoljong; her daughter, Princess Yeonghye, was the only child of Cheoljong to survive into adolescence, as the king’s other offspring died in infancy.
