Royal Arctic Line A/S is a shipping company owned by the Government of Greenland. It serves as the primary maritime logistics provider for Greenland, holding a government-granted concession to manage the transport of sea freight to, from, and within the country.
History
The company was established in 1993 following the reorganization of the state-owned conglomerate KNI (Kalaallit Niuerfiat). Its historical origins date back to the Royal Greenland Trade Department (Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel or KGH), a Danish state enterprise that controlled trade and transport in Greenland from 1774 until the introduction of home rule.
Operations and Logistics
Headquartered in Nuuk, Royal Arctic Line provides a critical supply chain link for Greenland's population. Because there are no roads connecting the various towns and settlements along the coast, the company is responsible for the distribution of essential goods, including food, construction materials, and fuel.
Historically, the company's main international shipping route connected Nuuk with the port of Aalborg, Denmark. In 2020, Royal Arctic Line transitioned its primary Danish hub to the Port of Aarhus and entered into a vessel-sharing agreement (VSA) with the Icelandic shipping company Eimskip. This partnership was intended to integrate Greenland more effectively into global shipping networks by utilizing Reykjavik, Iceland, as a transshipment hub.
Fleet
The company operates a fleet of specialized vessels designed for Arctic conditions. These include large ocean-going container ships and smaller, ice-strengthened feeder vessels. Many of these ships are equipped with onboard cranes to allow for the loading and unloading of cargo in remote settlements that lack developed port infrastructure or deep-water docks.
Subsidiaries and Related Activities
Royal Arctic Line also manages several subsidiaries involved in port operations, stevedoring, and logistics services within Greenland. Through these entities, the company oversees the operation of various harbors and container terminals, most notably the Sikuki Nuuk Harbour.
