Route nationale 184

The Route nationale 184, commonly abbreviated as N184, was a former national road in France, primarily located in the Île-de-France region. It served as a significant link in the road network to the northwest of Paris, connecting several major national roads and motorways.

Route Description The N184's historical alignment provided a key bypass and connector route. Its main course typically ran:

  • From an intersection with the A15 motorway (and formerly N14) near Saint-Ouen-l'Aumône, in the Val-d'Oise department.
  • It then generally proceeded westward and then southward, traversing areas that included Pontoise and Jouy-le-Moutier.
  • The route continued into the Yvelines department, where it intersected with other important axes, such as the N13 (now D13) near Triel-sur-Seine and Poissy.
  • Its original southern terminus was often considered to be near Croissy-sur-Seine or Versailles, where it connected to the N13 or N10.

History and Reclassification The N184 was established as a strategic part of France's national road infrastructure, designed to manage traffic flow around the rapidly developing northwestern suburbs of Paris.

  • As part of the decentralization and reclassification efforts undertaken by the French government in the early 2000s, many national roads were transferred to the control of departmental councils.
  • A substantial portion of the N184 was downgraded and subsequently reclassified as a departmental road.
  • Specifically, the section within the Val-d'Oise department was largely renumbered as the D184.
  • Segments of its former alignment in the Yvelines department were integrated into other departmental roads, such as parts of the D307.
  • Furthermore, sections of the N184 were absorbed into or superseded by the N104 (Francilienne), a major orbital route around Paris, particularly in the areas connecting to Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Poissy, thus providing continuity for a high-capacity roadway.

Although the designation "Route nationale 184" no longer exists as an active national road, its former path continues to play a vital role in the local and regional transportation network under its current departmental numbers.
