Roshal (Russian: Рошаль) is a town in Moscow Oblast, Russia, serving as the administrative center of Roshalsky District. Situated approximately 127 kilometres (79 mi) southeast of Moscow, the town lies on the banks of the Pekhorka River, a tributary of the Nerskaya.
History
The settlement that later became Roshal was founded in the early 20th century, developing around a railway station on the Moscow–Saratov line. It was granted urban-type settlement status in 1938 and attained town status in 1940. The name “Roshal” is derived from the surname of a local Soviet figure, though the precise individual after whom the town was named is subject to differing historical accounts.
Administrative and municipal status
Within the framework of administrative divisions, Roshal is the administrative center of Roshalsky District and is directly subordinated to the district. As a municipal entity, it is incorporated as Roshal Urban Settlement within Roshalsky Municipal District.
Demographics
According to the 2010 Russian Census, Roshal had a population of 30,437 inhabitants. More recent estimates suggest a stable population size, with minor fluctuations typical of small towns in the Moscow Oblast region.
Economy and infrastructure
The town’s economy historically centered on the railway and associated transport services, as well as light manufacturing and timber processing. Contemporary economic activity includes small enterprises, retail trade, and services supporting the local population. Roshal is connected to Moscow and other regional centers by the Moscow–Kursk railway line and by regional road networks.
Cultural and educational facilities
Roshal hosts several cultural institutions, including a house of culture, a public library, and a museum dedicated to the town’s history. Educational facilities comprise primary and secondary schools, as well as vocational training institutions.
