Rosamygale

Rosamygale is an extinct genus of spiders belonging to the suborder Mygalomorphae (the group that includes tarantulas and their relatives). The genus is known from fossil material recovered from Triassic‑age sedimentary deposits in Scotland. It is notable for representing one of the earliest documented mygalomorph spiders in the fossil record.

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Arthropoda
  • Class: Arachnida
  • Order: Araneae
  • Suborder: Mygalomorphae
  • Family: incertae sedis (family placement has not been definitively resolved)
  • Genus: Rosamygale

Species
The type and currently sole species assigned to the genus is Rosamygale scotica (or R. scotia), described on the basis of a single fossil specimen. Further species have not been reported.

Discovery and Geological Context
Fossils attributed to Rosamygale were discovered in Early to Middle Triassic strata of the Scottish Midland Valley. The specimens consist of a compressed impression of the dorsal carapace and associated leg fragments, preserving sufficient morphological detail to assign the material to Mygalomorphae. The precise stratigraphic horizon and age have been reported as Late Early Triassic (approximately 250–245 million years ago), although some sources cite a slightly younger Middle Triassic age; the exact dating remains subject to ongoing research.

Significance
Rosamygale provides important evidence for the early diversification of mygalomorph spiders, a lineage that today includes large, burrowing predators such as tarantulas and trapdoor spiders. Its presence in Triassic deposits extends the known temporal range of mygalomorphs by several tens of millions of years, offering insight into the evolutionary history of ground‑dwelling arachnids during the early Mesozoic era.

Etymology
The generic name combines the Latin word rosa (“rose”) with the Greek mygale (“spider”), a construction commonly used in arachnological nomenclature to denote spider taxa. The species epithet scotica (or scotia) references Scotland, the locality where the fossil material was found.

Research History
The genus was formally described in a peer‑reviewed publication in the early 2010s (author(s) and journal details are cited in the original description). Since its initial description, Rosamygale has been referenced in several works discussing the early fossil record of mygalomorph spiders and the paleoecology of Triassic terrestrial ecosystems.
