Born in Detroit, Michigan, Brewer earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Michigan State University and a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School. She began her career as a management trainee at Johnson & Johnson and later held senior positions at Kimberly‑Clark and Procter & Gamble.

In 2005, Brewer joined Walmart Inc., where she eventually became President and CEO of Sam’s Club, the company’s membership‑warehouse subsidiary, a role she held from 2012 to 2017. She was the first Black woman to lead a Walmart division. In 2017, Brewer was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Starbucks Corporation, making her the first Black woman to hold an executive position at the global coffee chain. She served in that capacity until 2022, overseeing international expansion, digital initiatives, and operational performance.

Brewer has been a member of the board of directors of Amazon.com, Inc. (since 2020) and Lockheed Martin Corporation (since 2021). In December 2023, she was elected chair of the board of Walgreens Boots Alliance, with her tenure set to begin in 2024.
