Ron Wood (footballer, born 1925)

Ronald "Ron" Wood (born 15 June 1925 – died 13 February 1993) was an English professional footballer who played as a defender, primarily as a full-back. He is most notably remembered for his extensive playing career with Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday, and later for a brief managerial spell.

Playing Career

Wood began his professional career after World War II, joining Barnsley in 1947. He quickly established himself as a reliable and consistent presence in the club's defence, making 290 league appearances and scoring one goal over nine seasons. His tenure at Oakwell cemented his reputation as a dedicated professional.

In 1956, Wood transferred to his hometown club, Sheffield Wednesday. He continued to be a key player for the Owls, contributing significantly to their success in the Second Division. He made 78 league appearances for the club and was an integral part of the team that secured promotion to the First Division by winning the Second Division title in the 1958–59 season.

Following his successful period at Sheffield Wednesday, Wood moved to Bradford Park Avenue in 1959, where he played for one season, adding 28 league appearances to his name before retiring from professional playing in 1960. Across his professional career, he accumulated nearly 400 league appearances.

Managerial Career

After his playing career concluded, Ron Wood transitioned into management. He took on the role of manager at Bradford Park Avenue for a spell between 1960 and 1961. He also had a brief stint as a caretaker manager for Sheffield Wednesday in 1961 following his playing career there.

Later Life

Ron Wood passed away on 13 February 1993, at the age of 67.
