Ron Rolford Rolston (born June 30, 1966) is an American ice‑hockey coach and former player. He is most prominently known for his tenure as head coach of the National Hockey League (NHL) Buffalo Sabres during the 2013–2014 season and for serving in various coaching capacities within the NHL, American Hockey League (AHL), and collegiate hockey.
Early life and playing career
Ron Rolston was born in Buffalo, New York. He played junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey Association before attending the University of Michigan, where he played as a defenseman for the Michigan Wolverines men’s ice‑hockey team from 1984 to 1988. After graduating, Rolston briefly played professional hockey in the International Hockey League (IHL) and the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) before ending his playing career in the early 1990s.
Coaching career
Collegiate coaching
Rolston began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Michigan, in 1990. He later served as an assistant at Bowling Green State University (1993–1998) and was appointed head coach of the University of Massachusetts Lowell River Hawks in 1998, a position he held until 2005. At Lowell, he guided the program to multiple NCAA tournament appearances and earned the Hockey East Coach of the Year award in 2002.
AHL experience
In 2005, Rolston became head coach of the Portland Pirates of the AHL, the primary affiliate of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. During his three‑season tenure, the Pirates recorded a cumulative regular‑season record of 113–84–13 and made two playoff appearances.
National Hockey League

Assistant coaching roles – Rolston joined the Buffalo Sabres as an assistant coach for the 2008–2009 season under head coach Lindy Ruff. He remained in that capacity until 2013, when he was named interim head coach following the dismissal of Ruff.

Interim/Head coach of the Buffalo Sabres – On February 20, 2013, Rolston was appointed interim head coach of the Sabres. He was retained as the permanent head coach on June 13, 2013, signing a three‑year contract. During the 2013–2014 season, the Sabres finished with a 30‑44‑8 record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Rolston was relieved of his duties on April 26, 2014.

Subsequent positions – After his departure from Buffalo, Rolston served as an associate coach for the Minnesota Wild (2015–2017) and later as an assistant coach for the Anaheim Ducks (2017–2020). He returned to the AHL as head coach of the San Jose Barracuda for the 2020–2021 season.
