Ronald Edward McAuliffe OBE (25 June 1918 – 16 August 1988) was an Australian politician and sports administrator, best known for his leadership of the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) and his role in establishing the State of Origin series. He served as a Senator for Queensland representing the Australian Labor Party from 1971 to 1981.
Early life and education
Born in Brisbane, Queensland, McAuliffe attended St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace. In 1932 he played rugby league for the school’s first team and began senior competition with the Northern Suburbs club in 1937.
Military service
During World War II McAuliffe enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, serving as a warrant officer for five years in the Middle East and New Guinea before being discharged after the war.
Career before politics
After his military service he worked in the Queensland Railways Audit Office. His involvement with rugby league deepened through connections made while living in Fortitude Valley, where he associated with local club players and officials. In 1951 McAuliffe was elected to the Valleys club committee and became its delegate to the Brisbane Rugby League. He served as chairman of the Brisbane Rugby League (1952) and, following its merger into the QRL in 1953, assumed the role of secretary for the statewide body. During this period he negotiated the lease of Lang Park (now Suncorp Stadium) from the Brisbane City Council.
Political career
On 30 June 1971 McAuliffe was elected to the Australian Senate as a Labor representative for Queensland, a position he held until 30 June 1981. While serving in parliament he continued his involvement with rugby league administration, presiding over the QRL and championing the concept of a State of Origin series—initially opposed, he later became a key advocate for its establishment.
Honours and legacy
In recognition of his contributions to sport and public life, McAuliffe was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1981. He died on 16 August 1988 from a stroke; his funeral was held at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Fortitude Valley. The Ron McAuliffe Medal—awarded annually to Queensland’s State of Origin player of the series—and the “Ron McAuliffe Stand” at Lang Park are named in his honour. In 2009 he was inducted into the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame.
