Ron Howells

Ronald "Ron" Howells (born 1951) is a former Welsh international rugby union player. A powerful second-row forward, he was a prominent figure in Welsh rugby during the 1970s, earning 16 caps for the Welsh national team.

Early Life and Club Career: Howells was born in Resolven, Neath Port Talbot, Wales. He began his senior club career with Bridgend RFC, where he became a key player in their successful era. Known for his strong scrummaging and lineout presence, he was a formidable opponent. Later in his career, he also played for London Welsh.

International Career: Howells made his debut for Wales in 1974 against England, during a period of intense competition for places in the national squad. He went on to represent Wales 16 times between 1974 and 1979, playing alongside some of the most legendary figures in Welsh rugby history. His international career included participation in several Five Nations Championship campaigns. While he was part of the squad during a golden age for Welsh rugby, his career largely coincided with a deeply competitive era for second-row positions, limiting his cap total despite his consistent club form.

Playing Style: Howells was characterized by his physicality and dedication. He was a traditional tight-five forward, excelling in the set-piece and known for his tireless work rate around the field. His combative style made him a respected player among his peers and a valuable asset to his teams.
