Ron Caragher (born August 18, 1963) is an American football coach who has served as head coach at the University of San Diego (2009–2012) and San Diego State University (2013–2014). He has also held assistant coaching positions at several collegiate programs and in the National Football League (NFL).
Overview
Caragher played college football as a defensive end and linebacker at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly). After graduating, he began a coaching career that included roles as a graduate assistant at Cal Poly, defensive backs coach at Stanford University (1995–1999), and defensive backs/assistant coach at the University of California, Berkeley (2001–2005) and the University of Washington (2005–2006).
In 2009, Caragher was appointed head coach of the University of San Diego (USD) football program, a member of the Pioneer Football League (PFL). During his four‑year tenure, USD won three consecutive PFL championships (2009–2011) and made three appearances in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs.
Caragher was hired as head coach of the San Diego State Aztecs in December 2012. He led the team for the 2013 and 2014 seasons, compiling an overall record of 9–15. Following his dismissal in November 2014, Caragher transitioned to the professional ranks, serving as a defensive quality‑control assistant for the Atlanta Falcons (NFL) in 2015. He later returned to the college level as a defensive analyst and consultant for various programs.
