Roman von Procházka

Roman Freiherr von Procházka (October 12, 1900, Prague – October 30, 1990, Vienna) was a prominent Bohemian-Austrian genealogist, heraldist, lawyer, and writer. He is best known for his extensive research and publications on the noble families of Bohemia and the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, serving as a vital source for historical and genealogical studies.

Biography

Born in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Roman von Procházka came from an old Bohemian noble family. He studied law at Charles University in Prague, earning his doctorate in 1923. Following his studies, he initially pursued a career in law, but his deep interest in history, genealogy, and heraldry soon became his primary focus.

Procházka dedicated his life to documenting the noble families of Central Europe, particularly those of Bohemia. His work became especially crucial after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the subsequent political changes in Czechoslovakia, which often led to the suppression or neglect of noble heritage. He meticulously compiled records, pedigrees, and historical data, preserving a vast amount of information that might otherwise have been lost.

Among his most significant contributions are his comprehensive genealogical handbooks detailing the extinct Bohemian lordly and noble estates. These works provided authoritative references for researchers and descendants of these families. He was also a long-standing editor and contributor to the prestigious "Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels" (Genealogical Handbook of Nobility), specifically the "Adelslexikon" volumes, which are standard reference works for German-speaking nobility.

After World War II and the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, Procházka emigrated to Austria in 1957, settling in Vienna. He continued his research and publishing activities there, maintaining his position as a leading authority in his field. He also penned his autobiography, "Meine zwei Leben" (My Two Lives), reflecting on his experiences and the profound historical changes he witnessed.

Legacy

Roman von Procházka's work remains indispensable for anyone studying the history and genealogy of Bohemian and Central European nobility. His rigorous scholarship and dedication to preserving historical records ensured that the heritage of countless families was documented for future generations. His publications are widely cited and form the backbone of genealogical research in the region.
