Rodman's Neck is a peninsula located in the northeastern Bronx, a borough of New York City, United States. It projects into [[Long Island Sound]], separating [[Eastchester Bay]] from the main body of the sound. The peninsula is primarily known for housing [[Orchard Beach]], a significant portion of [[Pelham Bay Park]] (New York City's largest public park), and various facilities for the [[New York City Police Department]] (NYPD).
Geography and Location
Rodman's Neck is situated at the easternmost point of the Bronx mainland. To its west lies [[Eastchester Bay]], and to its east and north lies Long Island Sound. It is connected to [[City Island]] via the [[City Island Bridge]], which spans a narrow channel known as the [[City Island Harbor]] or the [[City Island Causeway]]. The topography of the neck includes sandy beaches, salt marshes, and wooded areas, characteristic of a coastal environment.History
The land comprising Rodman's Neck was originally part of the vast tract purchased by [[Thomas Pell]] from the [[Siwanoy]] Native Americans in 1654, forming the basis of [[Pelham Manor]]. The peninsula later became associated with the Rodman family, prominent landowners in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries, from whom it derives its name. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as New York City expanded and developed its park system, much of Rodman's Neck became integrated into Pelham Bay Park. The most significant development was the construction of Orchard Beach in the 1930s under the direction of [[Robert Moses]], which transformed a series of small natural coves and marshes into a large, crescent-shaped man-made beach by filling in the water between Rodman's Neck and [[Hunter Island]].Current Use and Features
Today, Rodman's Neck serves multiple purposes:- Orchard Beach: The entire eastern shore of the peninsula is occupied by Orchard Beach, often referred to as "The Riviera of the Bronx." It is a popular summer destination, offering recreational facilities, a promenade, and views of Long Island Sound.
- Pelham Bay Park: As part of Pelham Bay Park, Rodman's Neck contributes to the ecological diversity of the park, featuring extensive salt marshes and woodlands that support various bird species and other wildlife. It provides opportunities for hiking, nature observation, and birdwatching.
- NYPD Facilities: A substantial portion of the southern end of Rodman's Neck is dedicated to facilities for the New York City Police Department, including a large outdoor firing range and training academies. This area is generally not accessible to the public.
- Marinas and Boating: Due to its coastal location, the area around Rodman's Neck also hosts several marinas and boating clubs, particularly along City Island Harbor.
The peninsula remains an important recreational and ecological asset for New York City, balancing public access with essential civic functions.
