Roderick Meiklejohn

Sir Roderick Sinclair Meiklejohn (1872–1961) was a distinguished British civil servant who held significant positions in the British government during the early to mid-20th century. Educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge, Meiklejohn embarked on a career in the civil service that saw him play a crucial role in various departments.

He notably served as Principal Private Secretary to several Chancellors of the Exchequer, including H. H. Asquith, David Lloyd George, and Reginald McKenna, during a period of considerable political and economic change, especially leading up to and during World War I. His administrative skills and expertise were further recognized when he was appointed Director of Finance at the Ministry of Munitions during the war, a critical role in managing the vast expenditures required for the war effort.

Following the war, Meiklejohn continued his impactful career, culminating in his appointment as the Comptroller of the National Debt Office, a position he held from 1922 until his retirement in 1937. For his extensive and dedicated public service, he was honored with a knighthood, becoming a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE).
