Rocky Lombardi (born 1999) is an American football quarterback who has played college football for the Northern Illinois Huskies and the Michigan State Spartans.
Early life and high school
Lombardi grew up in Michigan and attended Fennville High School, where he played quarterback and earned recognition at the state level for his performance.
College career
Northern Illinois University (2018–2021)
Lombardi enrolled at Northern Illinois University in 2018. After serving as a backup during his freshman season, he became the starting quarterback in 2019. Over the course of his tenure with the Huskies, Lombardi compiled more than 5,000 passing yards and recorded 30+ passing touchdowns, while also contributing as a runner. He was named to the All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) teams in his later seasons.
Michigan State University (2022–present)
In 2022, Lombardi transferred to Michigan State University as a graduate student. He entered the Spartans’ depth chart as a backup to incumbent starter Payton Thorne but saw significant playing time following Thorne’s injury. Lombardi subsequently started the remainder of the 2022 season and was named the Spartans’ primary quarterback for the 2023 campaign.
Playing style
Lombardi is described as a pocket passer with the ability to extend plays with his mobility. He is noted for his leadership on the field and his proficiency in reading defensive schemes.
Personal life
Lombardi is the son of former NFL player and coach Rick Lombardi.
