History
The mall was developed by a consortium of investors seeking to provide a consolidated indoor shopping experience for the growing suburban population of Rock Hill. Upon its opening, Rock Hill Mall featured a range of national chain retailers and local specialty stores, with two major department store anchors: Belk and JCPenney. Additional anchor tenants over the years included Sears, which opened a store in the early 1980s, and later a discount retailer occupying the former Sears space after that chain's closure.
Facilities and Layout
The single‑story complex comprised approximately 500,000 square feet of gross leasable area. The interior layout followed a traditional concourse design with a central atrium, food court, and multiple inline storefronts. Parking was provided in surface lots surrounding the building, offering capacity for several thousand vehicles.
Decline and Closure
Beginning in the late 2000s, Rock Hill Mall experienced decreased foot traffic due to shifting consumer preferences, competition from newer shopping centers, and the rise of e‑commerce. Anchor tenants gradually vacated: Belk closed its location in 2014, and JCPenney announced its closure in 2020 as part of a broader corporate downsizing.
